With the Daan Utsav (Joy of Giving Festival) coming up , Diya decided to give back to the community in the form of a sensitization program that creates awareness about the differently abled. We decided to conduct this program at colleges where we would be interacting with the youth of today and the change makers of tomorrow. After a lot of planning and rehearsing, we headed to our first stop – St. Joseph’s College of Arts and Science, Bangalore.

On September 15th, 16th and 19th, trainees Monisha, Steven, Farhan, Pavithra, Rachel, Siva Priya and Ashwin went in to deliver the presentation about themselves. They conducted activities wherein the audience were able to get a sense of what it is to be a person with disability. Each activity gave the audience an insight into the challenges a person with disability faces every minute.

There was a huge impact on both ends ; the audience as well as us. The audience shared that they were truly touched by how capable the trainees were and that the whole experience was an insight into the lives of people they don’t spend much time thinking about. For the trainees, there was a huge boost in confidence and self esteem. Rachel felt for the first time in her life, she wasn’t viewed as a person in a wheelchair, but just as a regular person. All the trainees viewed this visit as an enriching experience. They loved all the attention and  love they received from the audience. The trainees can’t wait to go to more colleges and spread awareness about themselves.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms. Neeta Pereira, HOD, Dept of Psychology, for all her support in making this event possible and successful. Thank you students of St. Joseph’s College of Arts and Science for your cooperation and acceptance.
